The song “Little Talks” by Of monster of men was release as a lead single for their debut of the album "My Head is an Animal". The song it’s quite peculiar because the verses bounce between a women with fear and man trying to comfort her. Demonstrating what she’s going through and how hard it is. The authors intended to write the lyrics a little too vague, so it can be open to many interpretations, as speaking with Interview Magazine, Hilmarsdóttir explained “We like people to read their own things in the lyrics”. The title is basically referring to something these two people used to have. The song expresses the difficulty of separation, the pain that causes, and although is hard, we can continue on in life overcoming our own obstacles, finding our self and in the end being there for each other.

The song starts with a very enthusiastic melody with the trumpet and then we can hear the conversation between the woman and the man. It starts with “I don't like walking around this old and empty house”. Expressing how thoughtful she’s being, the woman is describing (with a low tone in her voice) how lonely she feels without him, and in “The stairs creak as I sleep, it's keeping me awake” shows how she has this sense of fear and worry on what lies ahead. The male counterpart in response to that last verse says “It's the house telling you to close your eyes” trying to comfort her, being as positive and reasonable as he can be, trying to reassure her that he’s there, since it hurts him to see her so depressed as it shows in this verse “It's killing me to see you this way”.  It seems that not much can be done, so both of them feel hopeless, she not knowing what to do and him trying to help her without any success.

In the second half of the song she keeps arguing that something is wrong with her. “There's an old voice in my head that's holding me back” implies that she can’t let go of the past, since it’s holding her back. Afterwards, she states that “Soon it will be over and buried with our past” showing that she has accepted that soon it will all go away and everything will be fine. But the male invites her to not let go, in the verse “We used to play outside when we were young/ and full of life and full of love”. He tries to make her remember how wonderful and happy their memory of the past when they were together. She continues demonstrating that she feels lost or doubtful about something in her life with the verse “Some days I don't know if I am wrong or if I am right”. In which he answers “Your mind is playing tricks on you, my dear” telling her to stop worrying about simple things in her life. In the verse “Don't listen to a word I say/ The screams all sound the same”. She then acknowledges that her thoughts aren’t important as she thought it were.

After this point of the song, something different starts. The music in the background stars to build up while they both sign at the same time “You're gone, gone, gone away/ I watched you disappear/All that's left is the ghost of you./Now we're torn, torn, torn apart,/There's nothing we can do/Just let me go we'll meet again soon”. They are both realizing that in order for this relationship work and last, they need to both step back, in order to figure out who they are, and work their problems on their own. They realize that this is something necessary, as they both say “Now wait, wait, wait for me/ Please hang around/ I'll see you when I fall asleep”, stating that they both will wait for one another and, even if they are far, they will have each other in their dreams. On the other hand, in the chorus “Cause though the truth may vary/ This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore” Although nothing is for certain they know they are going to find each other in the end, finishing the song with a very emotional and upbeat trumpet solo.

The first time I heard this song, I went on a trip of emotions and feelings because I could relate it to a situation I was going through. Although many other people interpret the song on many different ways as I do, from the death of a husband, to someone going insane, I still stay with the same meaning I started with. It showed me that everything changes, that someone you thought you were close to will not be there one day, and that sometimes in order to something to work you need to fight for it, giving it your best, staying with the hope that you can still works things out, and that one day you will eventually crossed road and meet.
